'The Sikh Religion: its Gurus, Sacred Writings and Authors, Volume 6' Summary
Volume 6 of The Sikh Religion by Max Arthur Macauliffe focuses on the lives and teachings of the ninth and tenth gurus of Sikhism, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth guru of Sikhism. He was born in 1621 in Amritsar, Punjab, India. He was the son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth guru of Sikhism. Guru Tegh Bahadur was a brave and courageous guru who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his people.
In 1675, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb began a campaign to forcibly convert non-Muslims to Islam. Guru Tegh Bahadur was one of the few religious leaders who stood up to Aurangzeb and refused to convert. As a result, he was arrested and executed.
Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom had a profound impact on the Sikhs. It inspired them to fight for their freedom and to defend their faith. It also helped to solidify their identity as a distinct religious community.
Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and final guru of Sikhism. He was born in 1666 in Patna, Bihar, India. He was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth guru of Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh was a warrior-saint who led the Sikhs in a struggle for freedom from Mughal rule.
Guru Gobind Singh was a brilliant military strategist. He founded the Khalsa, the Sikh warrior brotherhood, and he also wrote the Akal Purakh Prakash, a treatise on Sikh philosophy and ethics.
Guru Gobind Singh was a martyr for his faith. He was killed in battle in 1708, but his legacy lives on. He is considered to be the embodiment of the Sikh ideals of courage, compassion, and justice.
Volume 6 of The Sikh Religion is a fascinating and informative book that provides a wealth of insights into the lives and teachings of Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. It is well-written and easy to read, even for those who are not familiar with Sikhism.
